Solution

Solar + Battery + Generator = Microgrid

Butterfield Fire Station is a Public Works project for the City of Morgan Hill's newest fire station, built in 2024 by Kent Construction. The roughly 5,800 sq ft station includes a two-vehicle apparatus bay, equipment cleaning areas, a fitness room, three bunk rooms, a combined kitchen and dayroom, two restrooms with showers, and drought-friendly landscaping.

Objectives

The City of Morgan Hill prioritizes sustainability on every project and wanted to lower carbon emissions while reducing the station's long-term operating expenses. They also required a complete microgrid combining solar, batteries, and a backup generator — and wanted a single local partner that could integrate the multiple installations happening across the property.

Challenges

Multiple installations had to happen across the site during active new construction. The solar scope alone included three different array types — a solar carport canopy, a composition-roof mount, and a flat-roof tilted system — each with its own install procedure. The battery, generator, and renewable-energy switchgear had to fit a tight equipment room, and underground conduits had to be planned long in advance to land precisely under the eventual equipment. Everything then had to be programmed to operate as one seamless microgrid.

Solution Delivered

A fully commissioned microgrid integrated across new construction.

Simmitri partnered with manufacturer rep Current Energy and our electrical engineers to engineer the microgrid, then coordinated closely with the on-site construction electricians to confirm their gear was compatible with our systems. We worked with the roofer on attachment details so the flat-roof solar array sits elevated off the deck, allowing future roof maintenance without removing panels. Installations were phased to follow new-construction progress, and the entire microgrid — solar, batteries, generator, and switchgear — was thoroughly tested and commissioned with Current Energy to ensure seamless operation across all sources.
